Underground Storage Tank Locate Service: Do You Need It?

Underground Storage Tank Locate Service: Do You Need It?

Years ago, people used oil stored in underground oil tanks for heating.  As natural gas and other energy resources have replaced oil, the tanks are of no use, but they are still buried under the soil, causing serious repercussions.  These problems might worsen if the tanks are not located and replaced on time. Remember, the tanks have a usable life of about 20 years before they need to be replaced.

Locating underground storage tanks is challenging, so hiring underground storage tank locate service professionals is recommended.

What Are the Signs of Hidden Underground Storage Tanks?

If you are uncertain about hiring professionals for underground locates, look for the following signs.

Oil Tank Pipe Cap

Oil tank pipes still exist even after moving from oil to natural gas.  You should look for signs of a buried oil tank by looking for the metal caps topping the filler pipes.  The approximate diameter of these caps is 3 inches. You might find them hiding under the soil surface.

Oil Tank Vent Pipe

Excess vapor used to form inside the tanks and it needed to vent. For this, venting pipes installed above the surface were used. You can find these pipes attached to the side of your home, sloping downwards. The standard diameter of vent pipes is 1 ⅓ inches. If pipes were cut or painted, you might find it difficult to spot them.

Feeder Lines

The fuel was supplied from the underground tank to the oil furnace through feeder lines, which are generally buried underground. Only in a few cases, the feeder lines are visible. If there is a copper pipe of approximately ¼ to ½ inch in diameter around your foundation or furnace, it signifies there is an underground tank. Other signs are crimped pipes around the furnace.

Sinking Soil

When an underground oil tank collapses, the soil above it starts sinking. If the depression in the soil is significant, the sunken area becomes visible on the surface. Sudden depressions in the soil size indicate sinking soil and the presence of underground oil tanks.

Why Choose Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) for Underground Storage Tank Locate Services
